Magistrate Orders Probe into Defamatory Social Media Posts

COLOMBO (News 1st); Colombo Chief Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali has ordered the Cybercrime Surveillance and Intelligence Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take necessary steps to obtain information regarding five social media accounts.

This order is in connection with a case involving defamatory and false statements allegedly posted on social media against Court of Appeal Judge B. Shashi Mahendran.

The directive follows a complaint lodged by Judge Mahendran with the Cybercrime Surveillance and Intelligence Unit on the 16th of this month. 

After presenting the findings to the court, the Magistrate issued the order to proceed with the investigation.
