Colombo (News 1st); The Sri Lankan government is exploring the potential of utilizing the island's abundant water sources to boost tourism and urban passenger transport.
Recognizing the strategic advantage of its waterways, the government has proposed the initiation of a boat service covering various areas within the island and along the coastline.
The proposed coastline transport service will connect Puttalam-Fort, Fort-Galle, and Galle-Matara, aiming to enhance tourism and passenger transport through the development of necessary infrastructure.
Additionally, the project seeks to promote tourism by leveraging inland water resources such as Hamilton Ela, Bere Wewa, Diyawanna Oya, and Madu Gaga.
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism to conduct a feasibility study for the project.
Based on the results of this study, the project will be implemented as a public-private partnership, combining resources and expertise from both sectors.
This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the development of the tourism industry and improve urban passenger transport, making use of Sri Lanka's natural water resources.
