COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Ministry of Health has raised concern over a significant increase in HIV infections among the youth in Sri Lanka.
According to the National STD/AIDS Control Program, 115 HIV cases were identified last year among individuals aged 15 to 24.
The total number of HIV infections reported in the country in 2024 was 824, of which 718 were male.
Meanwhile, 47 AIDS-related deaths were reported last year — a 20% decrease compared to 2023.
Health authorities warn that the spread of HIV is on the rise and urge the public, especially young people, to get tested without delay.
