COLOMBO (News 1st): The National Union of Seafarers Sri Lanka (NUSS) inaugurated the country's first Seafarer Wellness Centre, "The Palace," today (20).
The event marked a significant milestone in recognizing the contributions and addressing the well-being of seafarers.
Katie Higginbottom, Chairperson and Head of ITF Seafarers' Trust, highlighted the challenges faced by seafarers during the pandemic, including denied shore leave and crew changes.
She emphasized the importance of the new facility, stating, "Seafarers deserve a palace," acknowledging their critical role in maintaining the global economy.
Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, Janith Kodithuwakku, reiterated the government's goal to train 50,000 seafarers by 2030. He announced the formation of a new ministerial committee to lead this initiative, emphasizing the importance of seafarers in transforming Sri Lanka into a maritime hub.
Joni Simpson, Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Office for Sri Lanka and Maldives, recognized the dedication of seafarers and reaffirmed the commitment to their well-being. She highlighted the collaboration between ILO and NUSS in advancing workers' rights and ensuring compliance with the ILO Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), which Sri Lanka ratified in 2016.
"The Palace" offers much more than lodging; it is a sanctuary providing wellness services, recreational activities, and a community atmosphere to support the physical and mental well-being of seafarers.
