Department of Railways Tests New Device Developed to Prevent Elephant Collisions

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Department of Railways has announced that testing has commenced on a newly developed device designed to detect wild elephants.

Accordingly, the device is currently being tested on a train operating at night along the Batticaloa railway line.

The equipment allows train drivers to detect wild elephants from a distance of 500 meters.

Professor Lilantha Samaranayake from the University of Peradeniya, who developed the device, stated that improvements have been made to minimize weaknesses identified during testing.

Meanwhile, Minister of Environment Dhammika Patabendige stated that several measures are being implemented along the Batticaloa and Trincomalee railway lines to prevent elephant-train collisions.
