Colombo (News 1st); Retired Major & Attorney-at-Law Ajith Prasanna was granted bail by the Court of Appeal on Wednesday (13) after being placed in remand custody for almost a year by the Magistrate's Court.
In December 2019, the Colombo Additional Magistrate ordered for Ajith Prasanna to be remanded on the charge of making statements to influence witnesses in a case taken up for trial at the Fort Magistrate's Court.
The case was related to the abduction and enforced disappearance of 11 youth from Colombo in 2008/2009.
The matter was called up in the presence of Court of Appeal judges Devika Abeyratne and Priyantha Fernando who ordered Ajith Prasanna to be released on 02 personal bails amounting to Rs. 500,000/- each.
The order was made after considering the appeal filed by Ajith Prasanna against the Additional Magistrate's order to place him in remand custody.
The Court ordered Ajith Prasanna to appear at the Criminal Investigations Department on the final Sunday of every month, after placing bail.
Major Ajith Prasanna provided an affidavit to the court stating he would not act in a manner that would pose an obstruction to the prosecution or the witnesses of the prosecution.
