COLOMBO (News 1st) - Elpitiya residents have submitted a fundamental rights petition to the Supreme Court requesting Elpitiya PS elections not to be held using the list of electoral candidates from 2017. On the 30th of August, Supreme Court ordered a PS election to be called for the Elpitiya Electorate on the 11th of October to appoint new representatives. The petitioners added that the National Elections Commission had made the decision without convening the Commission and therefore stressed that the gazette issued by the Chairman of the National Elections Commission on the 02nd of September was against the law. The petitioners went on to note that holding an election according to the NEC Chairman's Gazette was illegal and would clearly violate their fundamental rights.
