Colombo (News1st): The Ceylon Teacher Services Union launched an island-wide protest campaign today (Feb 15) against the decision taken to imprison a teacher in Kurunegala.
The protests were held in Theldeniya, Gampola, Walasmulla, Dambulla, Badulla, Mathugama, Padiyathalawa, Medawachchiya, Nochchiyagama and several other places.
The Kurunegala High Court on the 01st of February delivered a verdict sentencing a school teacher to two years of rigorous imprisonment on charges of assaulting a student in 2011.
The suspect is a 55-year-old.
High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundera ordered the convicted teacher to pay Rs. 100,000 as compensation to the student.
