Sri Lankan born Deputy Mayor of Oslo calls on the President

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Khamshajiny Gunaratnam the Deputy Mayor of the City of Oslo met with President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (January 04). She was elected to office by the City Council on the 21st of October 2015. Deputy Mayor Gunaratnam was born in Sri Lanka and migrated to Norway at the age of three and grew up in Oslo. Gunaratnam has been the leader of the Workers Youth League (AUF) in Oslo, member of the central board of AUF, and has been the editor of AUF's magazine, Praksis. Gunaratnam has also served at several bipartisan organizations, such as the Tamil Youth Organization and Youth Against Racism. In 2012 and 2013 she was a columnist in the Norwegian national newspapers Dagbladet and Dagsavisen. The Deputy Mayor has represented the Labour party on the City Council since 2007 and is now serving her third term. She has previously been a member of the Standing Committee on Culture and Education and is currently serving her second term on the Standing Committee on Health and Social Welfare.
