Namal Secures Bail, But Remains in Remand Over Airbus Bribery Case

COLOMBO (News 1st); Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, who is currently being held in remand custody, was today granted bail by the Fort Magistrate's Court in the money laundering case linked to the Airbus aircraft procurement deal, widely known as the Airbus Scandal.

The court ordered that Rajapaksa be released on cash bail of Rs. 500,000 and two surety bails of Rs. 100 million each.

Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena also imposed a foreign travel ban on the suspect.

The case relates to allegations of money laundering arising from the transaction involving the proposed purchase of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.

However, despite being granted bail in the money laundering case, Rajapaksa will continue to remain in remand custody until October 13 in connection with the separate bribery case being heard before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court, where he is accused of receiving a Rs. 100 million bribe linked to the Airbus Scandal.
