Bail Posted for Ex-SriLankan CEO's Wife Forfeited

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Fort Magistrate's Court ordered the forfeiture of bail granted on behalf of an accused who is currently believed to be residing overseas and evading court proceedings. The order was in relation to the case filed over the Airbus Scandal.

Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena ordered the forfeiture of the bail posted on behalf of Priyanka Niyomali, the wife of former SriLankan Airlines executive Kapila Chandrasena, who is named as a suspect in the Airbus Scandal case and is currently wanted by the court.

Under the order, two bail bonds of Rs. 20 million each, amounting to a total of Rs. 40 million, were forfeited. The bonds had been furnished by former Sri Lankan cricket captain Aravinda de Silva and his wife Priyangi Niyomali Wijenayake on behalf of the suspect.

A lawyer appearing for the sureties informed court today that a payment of Rs. 20 million would be made to the court.

After considering the submissions, the Magistrate ordered that the first Rs. 20 million be paid to court today, while directing that the remaining Rs. 20 million be paid on October 17.

The court noted that warrants remain in force against the suspect in connection with the ongoing Airbus investigation, as she has failed to appear before court and is alleged to be avoiding the judicial process while remaining overseas.

Former Sri Lankan cricket great Aravinda de Silva and his wife Priyangi Niyomali Wijenayake, who stood as sureties in the case, were present before the open court during today's proceedings.
