COLOMBO (News 1st): The Sri Lanka Army says it has gathered extensive intelligence on illegal drug traffickers operating along the southern maritime belt.
The Army Spokesperson, Brigadier Varuna Gamage stated that the operation is being carried out under a three-pronged strategy, with the primary focus currently on gathering accurate intelligence on illegal drug trafficking networks, both locally and internationally.
He noted that this intelligence is being shared with all relevant agencies, including the Air Force, Navy, Police, and the Special Task Force. He added that recent intelligence shared with the Sri Lanka Navy contributed to a successful raid in the southern seas.
He further stated that authorities have now obtained comprehensive information on drug traffickers operating in the southern maritime region, and that such information is being shared with relevant agencies at the appropriate time to support raids.
The spokesperson also said that Army personnel have been deployed to assist the Police and the STF in these operations, with nearly 7,000 personnel supporting close to 200 raids, leading to the arrest of over 200 individuals.
