COLOMBO (News 1st); Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has issued a strong call for reform, stressing the urgent need to build an efficient and corruption-free police service that earns public trust.
Wijepala acknowledged negative perceptions surrounding state institutions, including the police, and vowed to change that narrative.
“We know there are various opinions about state service in society, and the police are no exception. Our goal is an efficient, corruption-free public service — and that includes the police,” he declared.
The Minister highlighted the growing threat of organized crime and narcotics, describing them as a “serious danger” for the country.
He assured that the government has already taken decisive steps to curb these issues and will continue to act fearlessly.
Wijepala warned that misconduct by a few should not tarnish the entire service, emphasizing that creating a police force respected by the public is the need of the era.
He added that the old system cannot meet today’s challenges, calling for modernization and technological upgrades.
“We cannot move forward with the old police. Modernization is essential. We have already taken steps to provide knowledge and innovation to the department, and more reforms are on the way,” he said.
