COLOMBO (News 1st); The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka has issued a public advisory following a noticeable rise in fraudulent social media accounts impersonating Embassy officials.

These fake profiles are misleading the public by posing as legitimate representatives of the U.S. government, said the embassy in a statement on Tuesday (20).

The Embassy urged social media users to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of any account claiming to represent the U.S. Embassy or its personnel.

To ensure access to accurate and up-to-date information, the Embassy recommends the public refer only to its official website and verified social media accounts:

- Website: https://lk.usembassy.gov
- Ambassador Julie Chung on X: @USAmbSL
- U.S. Embassy Sri Lanka on X: @USEmbSL
- Instagram: @USEmbSL
- Facebook: facebook.com/Colombo.USEmbassy

The Embassy also clarified that Ambassador Julie Chung does not maintain any personal accounts on Facebook, Instagram, or Telegram. Any such profiles should be considered fraudulent.

Additionally, the Embassy emphasized that U.S. consular officials do not contact individuals via social media or direct messaging regarding visa services.
