COLOMBO (News 1st); A gold-plated T-56 assault rifle was discovered in the Wellawatte area, prompting a special investigation by law enforcement authorities.
According to Police Spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manatunga, the weapon was found inside a travel bag placed in the trunk of a car driven by a 67-year-old woman. She was reportedly transporting the bag to her residence, unaware of its contents.
The woman is believed to have assumed the firearm was a toy gun, SSP Thalduwa stated.
Upon noticing the suspicious item, security personnel alerted the police, who then confirmed the presence of a gold-plated T-56 rifle along with a matching magazine.
Authorities have since launched an investigation to determine the origin of the weapon, its intended use, and how it came into the woman’s possession.
