COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lankan authorities have launched a high-level investigation into an alleged assassination plot targeting the currently suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP), Deshbandu Tennakoon.
The plot is believed to have been orchestrated by notorious underworld figure Kanjipani Imran, who is reportedly operating from Dubai, revealed Ananda Wijepala, Sri Lanka's Minister of Public Security during Tuesday's (20) partliament session.
According the minister, the plan involved issuing a contract killing order to a remand prisoner identified as V. Saman Kumara, also known by the alias “I.D.H. Sudda,” currently detained at the Boossa Prison. Investigators believe the order was communicated via a phone call.
Telecommunication analysis reports related to the phone number used in the call have been obtained and reviewed by authorities. The case has been formally reported to the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
The court has granted permission to verify the presence of the suspect within Boossa Prison and to record statements as part of the ongoing investigation, said the Minister.
