CID Records Statements From Remanded Police Chief

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recorded statements from Deshabandu Thennakoon, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), who is currently in remand custody.

According to Gamini B. Dissanayake, the prison spokesperson, CID officers visited the Dumbara Prison to obtain Thennakoon's statements.

Thennakoon will remain in remand custody until April 3rd, in connection with a shooting incident that occurred near a hotel in Weligama, Matara, on December 31, 2023.

The incident resulted in the death of an officer from the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).

In a related development, a proposal to remove Thennakoon from his position as IGP has been submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, signed by 115 Members of Parliament.

The proposal cites various allegations, including misconduct and abuse of power.
