NEC to Gazette Campaign Spending Limits Ahead of LG Polls

COLOMBO (News 1st) - General Secretaries of political parties contesting the upcoming local government elections were summoned to the Election Commission today for discussions on regulating campaign expenditure.

Chairman of the Election Commission R.M.A.L Ratnayake said that the meeting focused on establishing spending limits for candidates. 

He added that the official spending cap will be announced through a Gazette notification in due course.

The local government elections are scheduled to be held on May 6, with nearly 80,000 candidates vying for positions. 

These candidates represent 107 recognized political parties and 49 independent groups.

Meanwhile, nominations for the Mannar, Poonakary, and Dehiattakandiya Pradeshiya Sabhas will open on the 24th of March.

Nominations will be accepted until 12 noon on the 27th March.

Meanwhile, the deadline to deposit the bonds for these local government bodies has been set for 12 noon on the 26th March.
