At least 232 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air attacks on Gaza that started at around 02:30 local time (00:20 GMT), shattering the ceasefire with Hamas.

The Israeli attacks hit dense urban areas, makeshift schools, residential buildings, and areas sheltering displaced people in tents.

The attacks follow a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel has blocked the entry of all aid and goods for more than two weeks.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office said the attack was in response to Hamas’s “repeated refusal” to release remaining captives in Gaza, and the group’s failure to agree on ceasefire proposals from US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and other the mediators.

The White House confirmed that President Trump was consulted ahead of the Israeli attack.

Hamas blasted “Netanyahu and his extremist government” for overturning the January 19 ceasefire and “exposing prisoners in Gaza to an unknown fate”.

Hamas has also called for the “free people of the world” to protest the devastating attacks on the Palestinian territory.
