COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Justice Minister, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, has announced that a cabinet paper is being prepared to form a committee aimed at abolishing the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
The proposed committee will also work on introducing the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), which will comply with international standards.
Minister Nanayakkara expressed optimism that the cabinet paper will be approved in the next parliamentary session. "Hopefully, in the next parliamentary session, I will be able to confirm that the cabinet approval has been given for the abolishment of the PTA and to bring the ATA, which complies with international standards," he stated.
The PTA has been a subject of controversy and criticism for its alleged misuse and human rights violations.
The introduction of the ATA is expected to address these concerns and provide a more balanced approach to counter-terrorism.
