COLOMBO (News 1st); The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka has announced the implementation of an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) registration system to curb the use of unregistered mobile devices in the country.

This new online system, which will go live on January 29, 2025, requires all mobile phones to be registered to be recognized by local mobile operators.

The public is advised to purchase SIM-enabled devices, such as mobile phones, tablet computers, and dongles, only from vendors with a valid TRCSL Vendor Licence.

These devices must have an IMEI number approved by TRCSL.

Starting January 29, 2025, non-registered SIM-enabled devices will not function on any telecommunication networks in Sri Lanka.

Devices already connected to the networks before January 28, 2025, will not be affected by this new regulation.

Individuals importing or carrying SIM-enabled devices into the country must register them through the new equipment clearance system, which will also require approval from other relevant government institutions, including Sri Lanka Customs, the Department of Import and Export Control, and the Ministry of Defense.

To ensure your device is compliant, check that it carries a TRCSL-approved IMEI number before purchasing.

You can verify the IMEI number by sending an SMS to 1909 with the format: IMEI <space> <15-digit IMEI number>.
