COLOMBO (News 1st); Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, highlighted the significance of elections as an opportunity for political leaders in Sri Lanka to recommit to a new vision for the country and address past concerns.

Speaking during a global update, Türk stressed the need for a free civic space for political campaigning and debate, free from violence and restrictions on freedom of expression, association, and assembly.

Türk noted that while the immediate risk of conflict returning to Sri Lanka may be low, there remains a real risk of human rights violations being repeated. He called for sustained efforts towards accountability and long-term reforms, including security sector reforms, to prevent future violations.

"It's now 15 years since the end of the conflict in the country, and we all hope the violence and suffering of that period will never be repeated," Türk stated. He reiterated the commitment of his office to work with Sri Lanka, its people, and the new government to support the democratic process and economic advancement of the country.

Türk emphasized that the engagement of the UN Human Rights Office has always been long-term, focusing on underlying issues that have hindered sustainable peace and development in Sri Lanka. He highlighted that the voices reflected in their reports are those of Sri Lankans, particularly victims of past injustices and violence.

"I hope that the Council will continue to hear these voices and continue its efforts to promote accountability, reconciliation, and human rights for all Sri Lankans in a constructive spirit," Türk added.
