COLOMBO (News 1st) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa accused the Sri Lankan government of failing to fulfill its duty to war veterans.
Premadasa specifically highlighted the plight of veterans forced to fight in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
"Since our war victory, have we truly fulfilled our duty to the war hero community?" Premadasa questioned. "The answer, sadly, is no."
The Opposition Leader painted a grim picture of veterans facing poverty, forced migration due to hardship, and even participation in a foreign conflict.
"It's a tragedy that these heroes, who liberated our nation, now face such difficulties," Premadasa said. "Why can't we, the country they saved, alleviate their suffering? It's our responsibility to protect them."
He concluded his remarks by pledging his commitment to improving the lives of veterans. "I am committed to providing leadership to ensure that, starting this year, the war hero community in our country receives the support they deserve," he declared.
