COLOMBO (News 1st); A total of 23 people have been gunned down in Sri Lanka so far in 2023, revealed the statistics presented by Sri Lanka Police.
Police Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that 6 people were injured in shootings so far this year.
Priyantha Jayakody, the Former Senior DIG of the Crimes Division and Organized Crime Division said "In 2019, 273 homicides were reported, and that figure spiked to 523 in 2022."
He went on to note that 239 homicides were reported so far within the 146 days in 2023. "This is a daily spike of 1.6%. This situation is not suitable for Sri Lanka at all."
The Former Deputy Police Chief said that Sri Lanka Police needs to expand a successful and strong intelligence network to stop the weapons from being circulated in society and among the criminals."
