COLOMBO (News 1st); Former President Maithripala Sirisena says that the Prime Minister becoming the acting President would violate the people's aspirations.
The former President stated there is race for the Presidency.
The President has said that he will resign tomorrow (13).Thereafter, the Prime Minister would become the next President per the Constituion of Sri Lanka.
However, former President Maithripala Sirisena stated that he is unaware whether the Prime Minister would resign as well.
"The general consensus of the people of the country, especially among those protesting, is that the Prime Minister should also step down. At this time, the Government has to discuss with those who are involved in this struggle that initiated this historical a revolution, especially those who are in the Aragalaya" he stated.
Therefore, the former President said that he had informed responsible authorities, and the Speaker of the Parliament with regard to the importance of discussing with the protestors and taking them into account in the struggle to implement the future political, economic and social action taken as a Government, apart from measures which the Government takes as the Parliament.
"If these discussions are delayed, every day, our country may fall into a serious, very difficult situation than we could expect," the former President added.
When inquired whether or not the Prime Minister would become the acting President when the President resigns, the former President said that he does not know how the Prime Minister's mind functions, however the country will descend into chaos if the Government does not take heed of the people.
