Farmers demanding compensation for damages caused to crops

COLOMBO (News 1st); Farmers are demanding compensation for damages caused to the cultivation fields if the Government can pay compensation to the Chinese ship 'Hippo Spirit' which was carrying harmful organic fertilizer. 

The farmers stated this when the Government Registered National Federation of Agri Entrepenuers convened a media briefing in Galle on Friday (24), who demanded that the Government must carry out an evaluation and provide adequate compensation to the farmers.

Gayan Tharanga, the National organizer of the Government Registered National Federation of Agriprenuers, questioned as to why a Government MP would say that farmers will be punished if they are caught disposing the provided fertilizer, and as to the reason to provide farmers with waste fertilizer to dispose.

Emphasizing that these events will not have taken place if the Government allowed people to engage in cultivations as usual, Tharanga also alleged that the Government is attempting to punish the farmers after creating the crisis itself.
