COLOMBO (News 1st); The sluice gates of several reservoirs have been opened due to the heavy rains in the island.
The water level of the Mahaweli River has also risen due to heavy rains in and around Kandy area, within the last few days.
Irrigation engineers stated that due to this, three sluice gates of Polgolla Dam have been opened, and residents in the area below the dam have been warned to remain vigilant.
Moreover, a sluice gate of the Upper Kotmale Reservoir has been opened due to heavy rains in the central hills as well. Heavy rains in the Upper Kotmale catchment area have also increased the water level in the St. Clair and Devon waterfalls.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department warns that the prevailing low pressure area around the island may continue.
The Met Department said that heavy showers of more than 100 mm are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western and Northern provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Trincomalee districts.
Meanwhile, the landslide warning issued for 5 districts by the NBRO will remain in effect till 06:00 p.m. today (2).
