COLOMBO (News 1st); Prima decided to increase the price of a kilogram of wheat flour by Rs. 12/- on Friday (3).
The price increase came at a time when the President had imposed emergency regulations on the distribution of essential items.
According to reports the new Commissioner General for Essential Items is looking into the price increase and it is also reported that the Consumer Affairs Authority was not informed or consulted over the price increase.
Activists claimed the price increase by Prima is illegal as the CAA was not consulted as the per the provisions of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
The price increase has severely affected the people in the country, especially those who depend on daily wages, like in the estate sector.
'We use flour instead of rice because of the increase in rice prices. However, the flour price increase has also affected us,' said one estate sector worker.
