COLOMBO (News 1st): Upon initiating investigations with regard to the video that circulated via social media containing footage of a brutal assault on an infant, Sri Lanka Police on Tuesday (Mar. 02) arrested the abusive mother.
According to Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana, following investigations, Police were able to trace the location to Nawaladi, Ariyala in Jaffna Police area.
"The Police officers who visited the location this morning (Mar. 02) found the infant who is nine-month-old and the abusive mother who is 24-year-old," DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st.
The woman was arrested by Jaffna Police and the baby was taken into police custody to ensure he is taken care of in the future.
"Upon conducting further investigations, information has come to light, the 24-year-old mother who assaulted her nine-month-old baby had left the country few years ago for Kuwait and returned with the baby about a month ago.
Whilst observing an increasing trend in child abuse cases, the Deputy Police Chief sternly advised parents and elders to ensure the safety of children.
"There is a tendency of increasing child harassment, cruelty to children, discrimination against children, and other offences related to children. Sri Lanka Police are taking stern action against the perpetrators including the parents if they don't treat their children properly," DIG Ajith Rohana warned.
Moreover, territorial police divisions have been informed to take stern action against such perpetrators in respect of the offences pertaining to the cruelty against children, the Police Spokesperson emphasized.
