CUSTOMS SEIZES ILLEGAL VEHICLE IMPORTS

Colombo (News 1st); 12 illegally imported motor vehicles valued at over Rs. 55 Million were seized by Sri Lanka Customs.

Customs Spokesperson Sunil Jayaratne speaking to News 1st said the motor vehicles were apprehended by the Customs Risk Management Unit ( RMU ) on 23rd December 2020.

The consignment arrived in Sri Lanka in 03 40 feet containers from Singapore 'Generator Pats' as cargo in the Bill of Lading (B/L).

The Cargo weight was declared as 12,140 kg, said Sri Lanka Customs adding the motor vehicles were imported by misusing an officer's name of a High Commission.

One suspect was arrested and produced to a Magistrate's Court and was thereafter remanded to the 20th of January 2021.

Sri Lanka Customs said it duly informed the embassy concerned regarding the illegal importation where the embassy in return informed the Customs that they had not imported such a consignment.

Further, investigations are underway.
