COLOMBO (News1st): The Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) has issued a statement calling for the release of former parliamentarian Duminda Silva who is on death row.
Silva was sentenced to death in 2016 along with four others over the murder of former presidential Advisor Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra.
In the statement, Mano Ganesan notes Silva was under the influence of liquor at the time of the incident.
It added that youth must not be imprisoned for prolonged periods, and must be given the opportunity to rectify their mistakes and move on the right path.
Ganesan pointed out that the former parliamentarian might have been rehabilitated in the five years he has already served in prison.
He added that several Tamils Nationals have been imprisoned due to political reasons and they also must be reintegrated into the society.
