Colombo (News 1st); The Kurunegala Magistrate on Friday issued the arrest warrants on the Kurunegala Mayor & Four others in the case filed on the demolition of a building with archaeological value in Kurunegala.
This was confirmed to News 1st by the coordinating officer to the Attorney General, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne.
Senior Additional Solicitor General Sarath Jayamanne presenting facts to the Kurunegala Magistrate's Court on Friday said the law needs to be enforced strictly against any person responsible for damaging historic monuments irrespective of their status and position.
He further noted a national heritage is a very valuable asset to the country adding the value of a country is not only determined by finances, but by its rich history and artifacts.
Based on the evidence led at the Kurunegala Magistrate's Court, warrants were issued to be served with immediate effect against the Mayor of Kurunegala and four others.
The case will be called up again on the 10th of August.
