COLOMBO (News1st): Police have arrested 508 persons and seized 125 vehicles for violating the curfew during the past 24 hours, despite repeated requests and warnings by police and other authorities to the public to stay at home.
With the latest arrests, the number of people detained by police for breaching the islandwide curfew has now risen to 7358 since March 20. Besides 1768 vehicles too have been taken into police custody during this period.
The arrests come as police strictly enforce the curfew across the country as the authorities struggle to contain the spreading of the Coronavirus.
The government has been urging people to stay at home during the curfew people and police have warned that strict legal action will be taken against those who violate the curfew.
Health authorities have been stressing the public to ensure social distance when they go out when the curfew is lifted.
Health and law enforcement authorities have been lamenting on the behaviors of some section of the public for not adhering to the guidelines announced by the authorities and also failing to stay at home during the curfew hours.
