COLOMBO (News 1st):- The Sevanagala Factory of the Lanka Sugar Company has manufactured a disinfectant using ethanol. The disinfectant was manufactured for the factory workers.
The ethanol required to produce disinfectants required in Sri Lanka is produced by the Lanka Sugar Company. The production is being carried out at the Sevanagala and Palewatta factories.
ethanol which is a by-product of the sugar production is used to produce a disinfectant, with the prescribed content as per the World Health Organization regulations.
Chief Executive Officer of the Lanka Sugar Company, Gamini Rasaputhara speaking on the matter said:
"We have produced an ethanol based disinfectant for the employees of our factory. We believe that within about 2 weeks we would be able to free our people from this process. We are dedicated to this disinfection process on a daily basis."
Laboratory Officer at the Sewanagala Factory of the Lanka Sugar Company, Suranga Dulip said:
"We have used ethanol with a concentration of 96.3%. 98% is Glycerol and 3% is Hydrogen Peroxide. This also has water. This is the content of this hand sanitizer that we produced. To purchase 500ml of this sanitizer in the market it costs over Rs. 1800. It only costs us Rs. 300 to Rs. 350 to produce this sanitizer at our factory. But we cannot issue this sanitizer to the public as yet as we do not have the approval of the Consumer Affairs Authority."
