Colombo (News1st): Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila attending a meeting in Horana spoke to the media regarding the new constitution.
He requested Ranil Wickremesinghe, who said that a new constitution was not presented to the constitutional assembly, to read the first page of the document submitted by him. According to MP Gammanpila, the page starts by stating, "since we the people of Sri Lanka respect the diversity of our culture, this Constitution is presented to the nation that reflects the above diversity."
Gammanpila pointed out that it is not them who called it a Constitution, but the very first page of the document that was tabled. He noted that the Premier and his Government have gotten agitated when they attempted to point out issues in the document, which was tabled for debate, and have resorted to branding anyone who speaks against it as extremists and racists.
The opposition MP challenged Wickremesinghe and his Government to leave Articles 2 and 9 of the current constitution unchanged if they truly do not want to cause harm to the unitary state of the country and the significance given to Buddhism.
