COLOMBO (News 1st): The latest weather forecast issued by the Meteorology Department says the prevailing showery conditions over the island is expected to enhance in the coming days.
The conditions are expected to continue during the next few days from the 1st to 3rd October due to the low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka.
The following provinces and districts are expected to receive over 100 mm of rain in the coming days;
- Central Province
- North Central Province
- Sabaragamuwa Province
- Uva Province
- Mannar District
- Vavuniya District
These areas will also experience strong winds during thundershowers. In most other parts of Sri Lanka, showers or thundershowers will occur during evening or night.
The highest rainfall in the past 24 hours are as follows;
- Kurunegala (109 mm)
- Bandarawela (81.2 mm)
- Katugastota (73.3 mm)
The MET Dept. also says that ocean waves might go up to around 2 to 2.5 meters along the coast of Panadura, Galle, Matara and Hambantota.
Meanwhile, the disaster management centre says that about 350 shops have been partially damaged due to torrential rains that affected the Akurana town.
According to the Kandy District Assistant Director Indika Ranaweerahe, Akurana town had water up to four feet last night. These conditions disrupted vehicular movement in the town during the time.
