COLOMBO (News 1st) - Addressing an event in Colombo on Sunday (Sep 2), His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo expressed some strong sentiments regarding the current political landscape. The Archbishop stated that Sri Lanka needs to be independent and not beholden to other nations. He believes that this is this is the only way to safeguard our values as well as ensure that the future generations inherit a better once. However, the Archbishop admitted that even he is unaware of who could get it done, as he questioned the trustworthiness of the current batch of politicians. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith explained that most of the politicians do not want to relinquish power after coming into power. He explained that Parliament should be a place where public representatives come together to develop the country and not a place of infighting. The Cardinal believes that the country will be doomed if it continues on its current trajectory. His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith also stated that policies should not be implemented in the country without the consent of the people. He noted that in instances such as trade agreements a public referendum should be held to allow the public to decide.  He reminded the general public that Politicians are the guardians of the country and not it's owners and as such have no right to lease away the entire country for generations.
