COLOMBO (News 1st); Opposition groups launched a Satyagraha campaign in support of detained former State Intelligence Service Chief, retired Major General Suresh Salley, while security remained heightened around the National Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
The protest was staged in front of the Fort Railway Station, drawing the participation of several political figures, including former Members of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila, along with members of the Maha Sangha.
The developments come amid a rapidly evolving situation surrounding Salley, who is in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with ongoing investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. He was arrested on February 25 and remains under detention orders as part of the probe.
Police confirmed that security was tightened in and around the National Hospital following his admission. Officers from the CID and the Police Special Task Force have been deployed to maintain order and ensure safety in the area.
Authorities said Salley was admitted on medical advice late last night (7) and is currently undergoing treatment.
The situation has been further complicated by claims from Sallay’s family and political allies that he has launched a hunger strike while in detention.
According to relatives, the protest is linked to demands including the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). They allege that Sallay has refused food, water, and medication, escalating concerns about his health.
