Monk, Cleric Remanded Over Alleged Abuse of Minors

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan authorities have remanded two religious figures, along with a woman, in connection with separate cases involving the alleged abuse of minor girls in Eragama and Kandy, police confirmed.

In the first incident, a 21-year-old maulavi from Eragama has been remanded until the day after tomorrow following his arrest over the alleged serious abuse of a 14-year-old girl. 

In a separate case reported from Kandy, a Buddhist monk has also been remanded over allegations involving the abuse of a 15-year-old girl. 

The monk, aged 25, is reported to be attached to a temple in the Bahirawakanda area and is identified as a relative of the victim.

Police further confirmed that a 29-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the same Kandy incident on charges of aiding and abetting the alleged offence. She too has been remanded pending ongoing investigations.
