The suspension of Chaminda Kularathne from his roles as Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary-General of Parliament took effect on January 23rd.
Responding immediately to the development, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa strongly condemned the Speaker's actions in this regard via a post on X formerly Twitter.
The Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa argued that democratic fairness requires listening to both sides before punishing an official.
He claimed the Speaker’s summary suspension of the Deputy Secretary-General done without an investigation is a dangerous and seemingly personal move.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, Udaya Gammanpila said, the Speaker’s actions as a political farce.
He noted that the suspension of a Deputy Secretary-General serves as a clear indication of the Speaker’s lack of procedural understanding and legal awareness on such matters.
