COLOMBO (News 1st); Heavy rainfall has triggered a significant rise in water levels across Sri Lanka’s central reservoirs, prompting authorities to open spill gates to manage the flow.

Six spill gates at the Victoria Reservoir were automatically opened early this morning, releasing water into the Mahaweli River.

Following this, two spill gates at the Randenigala Reservoir were also opened, directing water downstream to the Rantambe Reservoir.

Officials confirmed that Rantambe has now begun spilling as well.

The Mahaweli Authority has warned that water levels in the Mahaweli River could rise considerably due to these releases.

Residents and communities using the river downstream of Rantambe have been urged to exercise caution and remain alert.
