Validity Period of Driving Licenses to Be Extended

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Motor Traffic has decided to extend the validity period of driving licenses.

Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Kamal Amarasinghe, said that a special committee has been appointed to study the possible extension period.

The committee comprises technical officers from the Ministry of Transport and Highways and the Department of Motor Traffic.

He further said the committee has been instructed to conduct a detailed study and submit a report on the matter, after which discussions will be held with the Minister of Transport and Highways, Bimal Rathnayake, and other officials to determine the next steps.

At present, the validity period of a driving license for light vehicles is eight years, while period for heavy vehicles, is four years.

Under the new proposal, these validity periods are expected to be extended considerably.
