COLOMBO (News 1st) - The National Vesak Festival was held today at the New Town Hall in Nuwara Eliya, with the participation of the Maha Sangha and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The event is organized under the guidance of the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs.
Coinciding with the festival, the National Vesak Week also commenced today under the theme “Let Us Associate With Virtuous Friends.”
As part of the celebrations, the National Vesak Zone will be held from today until May 16, centered around the Nuwara Eliya Buddhist Center.
The Vesak Zone will be open to the public daily from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Additionally, liquor stores and meat shops across the country will remain closed for three days during the Vesak Week.
In support of devotees traveling from Nuwara Eliya to Anuradhapura, the Department of Railways has announced the operation of special train services starting today, which will continue until May 13.
