Colombo (News 1st): The rare fungus Mutinus bambusinus has been documented in Sri Lanka for the first time in over 100 years.

The fungus, a type of stinkhorn, was initially recorded in 1919 at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, Central Province. This recent sighting occurred in July 2023 in a home garden in Galle, Southern Province.

The rediscovery of Mutinus bambusinus, detailed in a study published in the Ceylon Journal of Science, marks the first published record of this species in 104 years.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Peradeniya, the Wildlife Conservation Society Galle, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, and the National Institute of Fundamental Studies.

Fungi, including the Mutinus bambusinus, play a crucial role in ecosystems by aiding in nutrient recycling, bioremediation, and serving as biofertilizers.

Despite their importance, many fungal species remain understudied, with over 85% of Sri Lanka's estimated 25,000 fungal species yet to be discovered.
