COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lankan government aims to increase export revenue to $36 billion by 2030, according to Industry Minister Sunil Handunnetti.

He made this announcement during a meeting with entrepreneurs and industrialists in the Ratnapura District.

Minister Handunnetti emphasized the government's goal IS to double the current export revenue, which stands at $18 billion, to reach $36 billion by 2030. He highlighted the gem and jewelry industry as a key sector for rapid development, noting its potential to significantly contribute to this target.

"Our goal is to double our export revenue. Currently, we are at $18 billion, and we need to reach $36 billion by 2030. The gem and jewelry industry is one of the best sectors for rapid development, and we have recognized its potential. Therefore, as industrialists, it is our hope that you will make fair payments to the government and pay your taxes fairly to elevate this industry to the highest level," said Minister Handunnetti.

He also mentioned plans to establish a national center in Colombo that will operate day and night, providing a venue for tourists to purchase gems and jewelry. Additionally, a new industrial zone will be set up in the Ratnapura District to provide necessary infrastructure and technical services for those involved in the gem and jewelry industry.

"We have proposed, and the President has approved, the establishment of a gem and jewelry exhibition center in Colombo that will operate 24/7, allowing tourists to purchase gems and jewelry. Furthermore, we plan to start an industrial zone in the Ratnapura District to provide the necessary infrastructure and technical services for those engaged in the gem and jewelry industry. However, we need to aim for even higher targets," he added.
