COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has clarified that the recent surge in violence is primarily an issue of public safety rather than national security.

Speaking at a press conference, Ranawaka stated, "There is a tendency to confuse national security with public safety. The recent incidents involving organized crime gangs, including murders and abductions, are a breakdown of public safety. National security concerns arise when there is a threat of terrorism, an attempt to overthrow the government, or efforts to divide the state. Currently, what we are witnessing in Sri Lanka is a public safety issue."

Ranawaka expressed concerns about the potential involvement of security personnel in these crimes. "There is now suspicion about whether the recent court shooting incident had any connection with security forces. There is a significant link between the underworld, corrupt elements within the security forces, and corrupt political figures," he said.

He also highlighted the longstanding issue of illegal firearms in the country. "The problem of illegal firearms has persisted for over 30 years. Weapons provided to various groups during conflicts, such as the LTTE and JVP, remain unaccounted for. Discussing national and public safety without addressing these weapons is futile. These firearms need to be disarmed and neutralized, and those who possess them must be held accountable," he added.

Ranawaka emphasized that the current situation does not constitute a national security threat. "This is not a national security issue," he added.
