Supreme Court to Hear Petitions Against Deshabandu

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Supreme Court has scheduled hearings for nine fundamental rights petitions challenging the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as Inspector General of Police (IGP). The hearings are set for May 6, 7, and 8.

The petitions, which argue that Tennakoon's appointment violates the Constitution, were brought before a five-judge bench comprising Justices P. Pathman Surasena, Yasantha Kodagoda, A.H.M.D. Nawaz, Shiran Gunaratne, and Achala Wengappuli.

Representing Tennakoon, President's Counsel Romesh de Silva stated that the Supreme Court has already issued an interim order preventing Tennakoon from performing his duties as IGP. He requested the court to expedite the hearing of the petitions.

The petitions were filed by several parties, including His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and the Young Journalists' Association, who argue that the Constitutional Council's recommendation for Tennakoon's appointment was unlawful.
