Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath speaking to reporters in Colombo, alongside Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives,Abdulla Khaleel, highlighted the importance of deepening cooperation in the aviation sector to enhance air connectivity between the two nations.
He also expressed gratitude for the Maldives' commitment to providing employment opportunities for Sri Lankans and emphasized the need to diversify these opportunities.
"In our discussions, we extensively covered the enhancement of air connectivity and the deepening of cooperation in the aviation sector. I appreciated the Maldives' commitment to providing employment opportunities for Sri Lankans and expressed hope that we could identify ways to diversify these opportunities," said Minister Herath.
In a bid to facilitate cross-border transactions, Minister Herath proposed the use of the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) and Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) by Sri Lankan migrant workers in the Maldives. The discussions also focused on attracting more tourists to both countries, with Sri Lanka aiming for 3 million tourist arrivals this year.
"We discussed the possibility of using the Maldivian Rufiyaa and Sri Lankan Rupee for cross-border transactions by the Sri Lankan workforce, which would benefit our migrant workers in the Maldives. Additionally, we explored mutual cooperation to attract more tourists, keeping in mind Sri Lanka's target of 3 million tourist arrivals this year," he added.
As Indian Ocean littoral states, Sri Lanka and the Maldives explored collaboration in the fisheries sector, including transit passage for Sri Lankan fishing vessels to access the Arabian Sea.
Minister Herath reaffirmed Sri Lanka's commitment to enhancing the defence capabilities of the Maldives through training provided to the Maldivian National Defence Force personnel.
"We shared views on the provision of transit passage for Sri Lankan fishing vessels for smooth access to the Arabian Sea and further means of cooperation. Sri Lanka is pleased to continue its assistance in enhancing the defence sector capabilities in the Maldives through the provision of training to the Maldivian National Defence Force personnel," Minister Herath stated.
