COLOMBO (News 1st): In a bid to address rising rice prices and expedite the availability of the popular Keeri Samba variety, the Sri Lankan government has opened up imports to the private sector.
This move comes after the Cabinet approved the import of 50,000 metric tons of Samba rice through the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation.
Previously, the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation was solely responsible for procuring and importing the rice.
However, recognizing the potential delays in the public procurement process, the government decided to involve the private sector.
The Ministry of Trade is confident that allowing private sector participation will significantly accelerate the arrival of Keeri Samba in Sri Lanka.
