Police Report 2,937 Crimes Against Children in 2024

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Today marks the National Day Against Child Abuse.

Police revealed that 2,937 crimes against children were reported over the past 11 months of 2024.

Among these, 1,526 cases were of rape, while 596 cases involved other forms of child abuse. 

544 instances of serious sexual abuse were reported. 

The highest number of crimes against children were reported from the Western Province, with a total of 489 cases.

Anuradhapura district had the highest number of such crimes, with 173 reported cases.
